ponder and play.
Grace Varner is a ceramic artist who was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She got her BFA at The University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama. After college she joined The Steel Yard in Providence, Rhode Island as one of their year-long Ceramic Residents. She is currently working on her body of work to expand her thinking as an independent artist post-college.
Grace’s ceramic sculptures consist of themes of play and transitional periods. Her larger than life objects based in childhood are expanded and pushed into places of everyday struggle as someone growing up in today’s generation. By playing with scale, Grace enjoys making the viewer’s experience one of strange familiarity. There is a wisp of oddity and a reference to the uncanny in each one of her pieces.
